CURRENT RESEARCH

The 3rd Phase of the Research and Documentary Video on Minority Rights in Indonesia

Project Duration: November 2008 - August 2009
Sponsor: The Tifa Foundation, Jakarta
Locations: Riau, West Java, East Nusa Tenggara, East Kalimantan
Communities: Orang Sakai (Riau), Kampung Naga (West Java), Dayak Agabag and Tidung communiy (East Kalimantan), Buda Keling community (Lombok, East Nusa Tenggara)

Data Gathering Method: observation, indepth interview, and literature research. Each researcher is provided with an interview guide to conduct face to face unstructured interviews with informants, and to set up Focus Group Discussions with members of community in every location to discuss the subject of the research. Our research team will stay for one month in each of the above locations, and regularly sending their field notes every two weeks to the secretariat. We will dispatch a team of monitoring staffs at least once to each location to discuss the problems the field researchers encounter during their stay in locations.

Expected Output: First, critical understanding on the rights of minority groups and/or local communities in the respective areas of research. Second, a high quality book based on the finding of the research. Third, policy recommendation for the authorities regarding the issues of cultural minority groups in the country.

Through this project we are producing a research-based documentary video on local strategies in dealing with tremendous societal changes brought about by social, cultural economical and politial circumstances.

The 2nd Phase of the Research on Minority Rights in Indonesia

Communities: Ahmadiyah Islamic community in Cianjur (West Java), Parmalim (local community in North Sumatra), local community in Tengger (East Java), Tolotan community (South Sulawesi)

The first phase of our research on Minority Rights in Indonesia had been through last year. This year, the year 2006, we are going to conduct the second phase research with different communities in other areas in the country. In the first phase research we tried to capture the problems faced by local communities regarding the process of "normalizing" society brought about by the combination of the state's power and formal religious authorities. We have published our finding in a book entitled Hak Minoritas. Dilema Multikulturalisme di Indonesia (2005), which so far has gotten very positive reseption from academic as well as the general populace. In the second phase research we are focusing on the processes of minoritization the local communities have had to deal with in their entire life. In addition, we want to do three things in tandem: fisrt, scrutinizing Indonesian government policies and critically evaluating the state's regulations regarding the politics of citizenship; second, we are going to expand and to enhance our field research to dig-deep different cases in other local communities throughout the country, and; third, we are providing adequate data for our partners whose concern is on advocating the rights of local communities and/or marginalized communities in the country.
